It is simple food but YUMMY! HMB is my favorite day trip spot...a little strolling...a little shopping...and a sandwich on the sunny patio at Garden Deli! I even get one without mayo and mustard to take home. I LOVE the bread and the quality of the vegetables on the sandwiches. You can now buy loaves of the bread at the Deli and at least one of the local markets down the street. If I could change anything it would be changing the processed turkey slices for fresh roasted turkey!

I am a major sandwich person. This was truly one of the greatest sandwiches I've had. I got turkey & avocado with swiss on their olive walnut bread. it was delicious. i'll be back again!!

This is our favorite place to stop on our way to the beach to pick up lunch. The sandwiches are terrific - made with fresh robust bread and all fresh ingredients. Can be quite busy because it is so popular, but the sandwiches are worth every minute in line! Terrific picnic food stop!

Came here for lunch based on the reviews I read here on Yelp. This little place is easy to sum up. They have a very simple concept but execute the menu perfectly. Everyone knows how to make a sandwich but few put a sandwich together like they do here. The bread is the key here. We tried the wheat and French; both were fresh and European in style. The tomato, onion and lettuce were as good as any market stand and the pickles and mayo were special. Garden Deli has a good selection of chips and drinks. Their home made brownies are delicious.

Not a fancy place, more a hole in the wall w/in the San Benito House on Main Street in the heart of Half Moon Bay.... but boy-o-boy they make the best sandwiches! The sandwiches are piled high and only $6.50, on thick cut home made bread. I absolutely love the olive walnut bread. Chips, potato salad, soup of the day, and green salads are available for sides. You will most likely find a line of customers (as many locals as tourists), where you have time to peruse the menu on the wall and pick out your chips/sodas, etc, then you order & pay at the counter. They are very efficient and it moves fast. There is both indoor seating in the San Benito House dining room as well as ample outdoor patio dining.... or you are also welcome to enjoy your sandwich in the San Benito House bar, where they make what is probably one of the best Bloody Mary's I have ever had.... it is almost a meal in itself, nice and spicy garnished w/celery stalk, cucumber spear, pimento & garlic olives, and cocktail onion. This is a never miss spot whenever I am in Half Moon Bay!

Great spot for a casual lunch with the family. My kids loved the turkey and pb&j but even more the local musicians. I have found it hard to find a really good sandwich south of SF. This is my favorite so far - the walnut olive or wheat bread with turkey and the works. Only complaint is the line. Let your customers order outside and wait while listening to music.

I look forward to traveling here on my sunny weekend getways with my hubby...All I have to say is olive walnut bread with egg salad and avocado..mmm grab some crunchy chips and a cold drink and you are set..there is also a cute place to eat outside..lots of seats..bring a coat :-)

Turkey and cheese sandwich here! The bread was different than what I expected, instead of a roll, it was actual sliced bread. It was fresh, yes, but a bit thick for me. I ended up eating my sandwich as an open faced sandwich. I took the top off and ate it like a piece of bread with toppings on top. The veggies were skimpy, meat was alright.

Home Made Bread and fresh sandwiches can be found here. I have a soft spot for hot pastrami's on french and boy are they delicious here. The locals know this place well so be prepared for a wait but, it's definitely worth it. There is seating outside and a local black friendly looking cat hangs around to greet you and share your meal. Careful petting the cat, it bit and scratched me drawing blood. The owner was outside and she let me know I was free from becoming a rabies zombie so no big deal. One star was lost because I seen one employee touching money than touching fresh fruits to make juices. The sandwiches are too good not to make a stop if you ever find yourself in Half Moon bay.

The Best place to get a sandwich in town. The bread is amazing, I personally love their hot pastrami on white bread, but there egg salad on white is also amazing. This is the first place I go when I get home, I love it.

This place is hands down my favorite deli on the planet! My mouth starts to water just thinking about this place. My favorite sandwich is the Hot Pastrami with Swiss. They heat it just perfect and put it on these thick freshly sliced pieces of bread that are still warm out of the oven. Doughy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. they also put fresh kosher dill pickles to complete the taste, but if you don't like pickles, just ask. It is literally heaven in my mouth and I am truly convinced that my mouth will never come across a better sandwich. Thank you Garden Deli, for giving me something to love for.

My number one reason for eating here.. *drum roll* ... fresh baked bread. The menu is limited but what they have is fantastic! The olive bread in particular is great but I also had the wheat bread today and I can confidently say it's the best wheat bread I have ever had. If you were raised on wonder bread, sourdough or whatever brand you pick up in the supermarket like I was, be prepared for deliciousness from this bread, it's terrific. The meat and vegetable ingredients are fresh as well. Soup (chicken noodle today) is a little over salted. If there is a line, be patient because it can move slowly. And if you plan on eating there have your group save a table while one of you give the order just to insure you can enjoy the patio tables. *note: there is a sleepy black cat that will come to your table and sit there waiting for crumbs to fall to the ground. HMB is a great midweek summer escape and this place, known as the San Benito Deli to the locals is such a pleasant way to spend a lunch. Food = 4 stars, Service = 4 stars, Ambience = 4 stars Overall = 4 stars.

Simple, Quick and Delicious. Fresh ingredients, tasty, and nothing too fancy. I had their Turkey on Wheat, the bread is fresh and melts in your mouth. Definitely make a stop here when your in the Half Moon Bay area!

  • Kevan M.

Definitely go here for lunch when in HMB. Thick slices of freshly baked bread serve as a foundation for a great sandwich. They're not cheap ($6) but they are big (you may not be able to finish one in a single sitting) and delicious!

  • Sandy S.

The best wheat bread ever! Had an avacado and cheese sandwich which was so huge I could only eat half of it. The good news is I get to eat the other half tomorrow! My husband had the roast beef on sourdough bread which he also said was very good. We stopped in for luch on a beautiful sunny Monday and enjoyed our sandwiches on the back deck.

My friends and I went here on Saturday around 1ish to pick up sandwiches for our beach pinic. The line was out the door. They have a simple menu with instructions on how to order to make the process faster. 1) Pick your bread 2) Pick your meat 3) "Everything" includes mayo, mustard, pickle, onion, lettuce, tomato; or tell them what you don't want. You can add extra stuff in your sandwich like sprouts, cucumbers, etc. It's a simple menu, but what makes it so good is the bread! They bake their own bread. Quality of meats and everything else is great. Hot pastrami was popular among my friends while I got the roast beef. And the staff is super friendly. Even when they misheard an order for pastrami to be salami, they happily re-made it. As always, I like to eat dessert with my meal so I tried their brownie w/ walnuts. It's delicious! It moist with the perfect chewy-ness and not too rich. Definitely stop by here for sandwiches if you're in the area. There's a little courtyard with picnic tables to sit and eat outside.

One of the very few things I miss about living in Belmont, where this place was in range if I got down the 92 early enough. Oh, the thick-cut squaw bread, with pastrami, roast beef or turkey and avocado. So simple, and so good. A great place, with some nice little courtyard tables to the side. I really miss this place!!!

  • Robert E.

I actually wasn't blown away like others have been (honestly it's just another good sandwich), but I wasn't disappointed either. The staff was friendly enough, the prices were good (especially for how big the sandwiches are) , they sell Newcastle and Guinness and they have nice outdoor seating. Overall I probably wouldn't go back unless I'm craving a sandwich and they don't have a really long line for which they're infamous for.

WOW. OMG!!! The BEST sandwhich I've ever had in my life!!! (aside from a hoagie sandwhich i once had in philly). We were there over the 4th of July weekend and accidently came upon this place because it sounded like a good "vegetarian" restaurant since its name is "garden deli" (my husband is a vegetarian). It was around 3pm and there was a long line (i'm sure in part because it was 4th of july). Anyway, I got a hot pastrami on their whole wheat bread. It was the absolutely succulent....I normally wouldn't describe a sandwhich to be succulent but there's no other word I can think of that describes the homemade bread, It was that good. I may have to just take a trip to just have this sandwhich again. I also thought the service was excellent....they were FAST. The split pea w/ ham was also excellent.

Stumbled on this little Deli at the end of our day in HMB. Not really hungry after having lunch at "Barbs Fish Trap" but also knew I didn't want to cook when I got home, so we decided to pick up sandwiches to take home. I remembered reading a review about the homemade French bread. We ordered Turkey on French, Turkey on Wheat and Tuna salad in French (made with thousand island dressing). The "sandwich" maker was a beautiful blonde woman with a smile that would warm any cold summer day in HMB. We watching delight as the sandwiches got piled higher and higher with everything from the garden. She chatted with us through the entire process. My daughter wrote on her bag "KEEP OUT - DO NOT TOUCH- FOR MY MOUTH ONLY", knowing her dad would want a bite of her sandwich. This sweet "sandwich lady" said she enjoyed our company so much, she gave us complimentary coffee and brownies. (which were equally delicious!) There is a lovely patio outside with heaters, flowers and a "parrot sculpture" in the center of a mosaic table, that is so inviting you want to stay and get to know more of the locals. Located right on main street, you take in all the flavor. Was a wonder end to a wonderful day. Now in love with Half Moon Bay!

We are from the East Coast, and take our deli sandwiches seriously. Having read the other reviews, we were understandably excited about this place. It was horrible. The total lack of selection was the first issue -- they have an extraodinarily limited range of choices in terms of bread (only wheat, white and walnut olive), meats, toppings and dressings. There are no specialty sandwiches, and it's not even possible to get something as basic as reuben or an Italian hoagie. I'm sorry, but until an East Coast resident has reviewed a deli, it's truly not worth taking the suggestions of folks that don't know any better.

  • L H.

Best deli ever!!!! The only problem is that they close at 3pm, and I'm usually out of work at 3:30. It'd be great if they stayed open until 4 or 5.

Great lunch spot. The home made bread was awesome and the seating area outside was perfect since we were lucky enough to have a sunny day.

  • Sam S.

I have struggled for years to find a sandwich that comes close to the perfection that is this place (though every local calls it San Benito House, since they're part of the same building; I don't know if I've ever heard anyone I know call it the Garden Deli). I always go for avocado and cheese with everything on it, but the other sandwiches are just as great. Ecomama below mentioned the soup nazi, and yeah, there are definitely rules for ordering quickly, clearly, and decisively, but come on, have you seen the line? I'd put stiff rules in order if I had the customer base this place does, too. Get there right as they open (11) or later close to closing (3) because otherwise the line is out the door. The bread is what makes it amazing, though. The French roll is good, but I go for the wheat every single time. It doesn't get any better than this bread. Another reason to go when it's not as busy is because they tend to give thicker slices of bread when there are not so many people. Plus, good chance of getting fresh warm bread right out of the oven. Yum!

We had the Minestrone soup and it was like mush and had way too much oregano or thyme. Not sure which. No Italian would serve it. We also had a Pastrami sandwich but it was not real Pastrami. It was like a thin sliced overly salty ham. The place was rated 4 stars so we were really looking forward to it. Sorry to give it such a poor rating.

We stopped by here on our way to surf. Really small place with barely enough room to stand in line, but ample patio space to eat outside on sunny days. Be patient - the line can get really long. It's worth it though, especially for fresh bread. Great drink, chips and sandwich options available. The tuna sandwich was absolutely delicious - I still dream about it. We can't wait to go back!

After hanging out in Half Moon Bay for the day, stumbled across this place. At first I was just looking for something that resembled a sandwhich but was pleasantly surprised with what I got! I went after the turkey + cheese combo and what I enjoyed most was the bread. I live in SF but I would gladly drive here to get some of that goooood stuff :-) The sandwhiches are huge and were yummy as well! They do have a nice patio area but I would vote for getting it to go and heading to the beaches. On a nice bright day it's a good combo!

Delicious Vegetarian sandwiches! This place was perfect! We rode our bikes through town and stopped here, filled up on DELICIOUS sandwiches made with delicious bread (esp. the Olive Walnut) and sat outside on the colorful benches while someone played guitar and sang. We couldn't have asked for better.

I hope Subway never makes it way onto Main Street in HMB. They would go out of business in hours. Garden Deli has probably the BEST sandwich I've had . After an hour long hike along the coast, my tummy was rumbling for a turkey & avocado sandwich on homemade, whole wheat bread. The line out the door can be intimidating. Twenty minutes in line seemed like hours. Signs hang in bold letters explicitly noting to place your order with what you DON'T want (standard fixings are mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, lettuce). This can't be hard to comprehend, eh? The 20 minute wait in line could have been only 10 if the dumasses (yes, that is a word!) in front of me could have comprehended the signs and not say "I want salami on french with mustard, lettuce, mayo, and...um..pickle..." I will give these folks a break since the smell and sight of fresh baked bread had succumbed me to a yeast coma as well. The bread is made in-house: olive walnut, french, or whole wheat. Sandwiches are $6 for a whole or you can get a half and compliment with fresh potato salad or soup. There's very limited seating inside (one table) but a plethora outside.

Came for lunch before playing the ocean course. I got the turkey and swiss on french and hubbie got the avocado and swiss on the olive walnut bread which he loves. the tomato and carrot soup sounded good so we got that too. also got chips and drinks and it started to really add up. But the fresh bread is really delicious - I wish all sandwich shops had fresh bread...

If you're in HMB -- this is THE place to go to for a fantastic, reasonably priced sandwich and a sunny place to sit and enjoy. Well done!!

Great location, fun area to eat outdoors and the food is okay. However, the service is atrocious and so is the attitude of all at the counter - with people waiting 20 minutes or more they behave like they are worth the wait. The flow is apalling - there is no good reason for people to wait that long for basic sandwiches. Recommend walking down the street to the Cunha Country Grocery store - more choices, better service.

More than words is all I ever need... Sorry, I just had that stuck in my head. I like the Garden Deli. It's good sandwiches and basic eats. Yeah, it's nothin' fancy, but it's solid. I enjoy the pastrami and the turkey sandwich I had last time I was in HMB was really tasting and pretty filling, too. I always eat in the Courtyard and enjoy the day. That really is the best way to enjoy a deli sandwich, and it might be why it's a place that I like to go to whenever I'm up that way.

I love, LOVE, LOOOOVVVVE this sandwich shop. In fact, I sometimes pack up my kids to travel to HMB with little planned, with the specific intention of having lunch here. I love their bread, and have never been disappointed with one of their sandwiches. On a chilly day, their soups are also fabulous. If you are looking for a casual but delicious lunch stop, or are wanting to pack a picnic, THIS is the place I love.

How good is this place? So good that in the first month I lived on the Coast, I actually drove my car into the garage with my bike on top (note: my garage, like most, is not tall enough to accommodate cars with bikes on top), because I was so completely focused on the beautiful sandwich sitting on my passenger seat that I forgot about the bike. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but I had just finished a very hard, very long bike ride, stopped to snap up a delicious reward (the sandwich) on the way home, and was really, really excited about eating it. As I got closer to my house I went into auto-pilot driving mode and looked over to admire the sandwich. I couldn't wait to taste the warm, home-made honey wheat bread, the high-quality turkey, the generous serving of cheese, and all the luscious condiments that had been carefully applied to my specifications by the very friendly Garden Deli staff. I was lost in the bliss of anticipation when suddenly I heard a horrific crunch. I slammed on the brakes, looked up, and realized that I was halfway into my own garage. I don't know how I got there. Don't remember driving the last 1/4 mile, don't remember hitting the garage door opener...all I know is that one minute I'm in sandwich fantasyland, and the next I'm peeling a now-broken bicycle off the roof of my now-scratched car. And here's the kicker--I did the very same thing the following week. I'd ridden bikes for 10 years without ever having such an incident, and within a couple weeks of getting my hands on a Garden Deli sandwich, it happens twice. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Is there any chance we could simply dig this entire location up and airlift it over the mountain to my neighborhood? Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with a pickle on top? Theeeenx. Be sure to include the deli, the two really nice outdoor patios and the picket fence out front, and all the trees. Definitely be sure to scoop up the staff, most particularly the owner who loves dogs and has been known to look pointedly in the other direction when French ladies of a certain age and a lovely demeanor bring their beautiful black dog right into the shop with them, and who reportedly sneaks said dog little morsels of ham and turkey, thus even further civilizing this garden spot of Half Moon Bay. (Don't tell The Man. If this place gets shut down I'm moving to France.) Wait. Nevermind. Cancel my request. Do not move this place from Half Moon Bay. We need a place like this to stock up on really awesome sandwiches and snackies and drinks on the way to the beach at Bean Hollow. Yep. That's a better plan, just leave it where it is. OK. Wait. There is no sandwich place halfway near this good anywhere in my stomping grounds in the city or the peninsula. And sometimes I cannot brave 92 and all the SUV's and minivans and Porsches. Hmmm. OK. How about if some entrepreneurial type person finds a little house over here in say Belmont and puts up a picket fence and makes the side yard one garden and the back yard another garden and welcomes dogs and bakes heavenly homemade bread for the sandwiches and carries plenty of snacks and puts together a totally awesome sandwich and celebrates dogs with such a welcoming demeanor that even the Health Department couldn't harsh their mellow? No, not Beli Deli. It's just not as good. OK. That is definitely a better plan. Wait. Also put one in Potrero. And Hayes Valley. Also near Bernal Park. But make them all a little different and non-chainlike. Theeenx. OK. That's good. That's what I'll have.

Great spot to pick up some sandwiches before hitting the beach. Sliced fresh off the loaf, home made bread. Choice of French or Wheat . I like how they have alfalfa sprouts (50cents extra). Pretty huge sandwiches!

Thee best tasting sandwiches I have ever had. I have been meaning to write a review on this place forever. The bread is incredible and the sandwiches are something to make the drive for. We make the drive just for the sandwiches weekly! They have plenty of outdoor seating which is nice on a beautiful day. The staff is friendly and the lady that is always there is such a wonderful person! I can't state enough how incredible this place is. They also have treats and a wide array of chips and drinks including local tea which my Mother loved! I wish they had one closer but I understand the want to preserve it's uniqueness. It even had a write up in the NY Times! You can also purchase their bread for a great price by the loaf. I just noticed yesterday they do salads there, or maybe that was something special and always soups. This is one of my go to spots and one of my favorite places :)

  • Mary R.

This place serves great sandwiches that blew my skeptical husband away. The breads were fresh and soft - I had olive walnut and the skeptic had French. The counter service was not friendly by any stretch of the imagination, but I was in too good a mood to be bothered by that non-sense. The outdoor seating is very cute and great on those rare sunny days in Half Moon Bay. They have a great locally bottled sparkling honey tea that was a must-have for me!

Got a turkey with avocado on french bread. Sandwich was great, and simple. The bread was awesome, just like what everyone says, but I'm more of a "roll" instead of "sliced" girl, just a preference. Also, I felt that there was some sort of a secret sauce that should have been offered. But still, awesome tasting. Also, live music that was really good.

There is just one problem with this delicious little deli, now I will have to go back whenever we are even close to in the neighborhood! On a journey with my husband to find some waves for him to surf. Checked Lindemar, flat as a pancake. Sometimes the Jetty goes off when nothing else does, so we drove down to HMB. Even worse, and now we were getting hungry. Drove a little further south, turned onto Main and thought we would try the first place that looked "right". Boy, did we luck out. Best sandwich I have had in long time. He had a turkey/jack on wheat with everything. I had roast beef on a roll, hold the onions. Lovely staff, didn't make us feel like rookies! Some Dirty Chips. A couple of bottles of Anchor Steam. A nice drive back up the Coast to enjoy the sandwiches at Ocean Beach, and even better, there were waves! A great day thanks to The Garden Deli.

Don't get the 4.5 stars... The people were nice, the service was quick and the place had a nice seating area. Sandwich- I don't know if people here have never had a decent sandwich or something...but this was fine but nothing amazing. I asked if I should get turkey or roast beef and he suggested turkey. Got mine with everything, light on mayo, w/ cheddar and on the olive walnut bread. Sandwiches are 6.50+ tax and the cheese adds 50 cents while avocado adds 75 cents. They charge 30 cents for extra meat, but I'd like to know if I can get 30 cents off if I want LESS turkey on my sandwich. I like balance in my sandwiches, but I thought this one was a bit off. He put a lot of turkey in, which is fine, but then put a buncha the OTHER stuff in too. The cheese came with two slices with was nice, but overpowered just about all the other flavors. The veggies (tomato, lettuce, pickle, red onion) were lacking...I like a good crunch to my sandwich and he put in basically one leaf. The bread was an odd purple shade (which I liked) and I picked up on the walnut but not much on the olive. The bread had a soft spongey texture, which is fine but nothing to write home about. The sandwich was large enough and half would get you to the I'm not hungry but eh I could eat stage. My friend thought there was too much turkey and picked off maybe a third of her's. I ate mine...cuz I paid for it. She wasn't impressed by her bread (french), said it tasted softer than normal but if you heated up some bread from Safeway it tasted about the same. She didn't like the olive walnut bread at all. I think I'd have rather walked down another block and tried out this place that had regular comparable sandwiches for $4-$5 and also paninis would have been good there too.

My favorite deli in the HMB area. I would go out of my way to hit this place up for lunch. Favorite bread is the wheat - sweet, almost like squaw bread. True that there's a line out the door, but it moves. Hard to finish a sandwich in one seating - it's piled high with ingredients, and they are not stingy with the meat. Far better than all the also-ran chain sandwich shops. Go early if you want the olive-walnut bread - they always seem to run out by 1pm.

Best sandwiches EVER! We decided to eat here after reading the yelp reviews. The people working there were very nice. I had the Avocado and cheese sandwich. It was great; fresh made bread, avocado and three kinds of cheese(cheddar, monterey jack?, and swiss). My husband had the pastrami which he admitted was the best sandwich he has ever had also. The food was prepared super-fast and we sat out on the patio area. Overall fantastic experience.

Well, I just finished eating my leftover sandwich from this place, so I decided to do a review while the taste was still fresh in my mouth. Hahaha. I was able to meet up with a friend here, who chose this place based on some Yelp reviews. Good thing these reviews did not disappoint! I had a basic turkey sandwich which turned out utterly delish. It's strange. How can two slices of whole wheat bread with the ho-hum ingredients of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mustard and turkey slices taste so damn good when someone else makes it, but tastes unappealing when I make it myself using the same ingredients? Go figure. This $6.40 sandwich appears overpriced at first, but I was able to save half of it for dinner, so that does make it worth it to me. That's not to say the sandwich was gigantic though, because it wasn't! Just that the bread made the whole thing taste divine....who knew whole wheat bread could taste so good? Also, the ingredients did taste very fresh, and there was A LOT of turkey! Maybe that's why I only needed half a serving! They don't skimp on the meat, that's for sure!! It was almost like a chunk of turkey slices in my sandwich! Awesome!! There was ample seating at the time we were there, but it was all outside, and we sat underneath a shady umbrella table. It was very pleasant sitting outside eating our sandwiches and catching up! I did see what one reviewer meant about being unsanitary. I saw this lady just put an uncovered loaf of bread on the counter right next to the cash register where people put there money there and touch to get their food. Ewwwww. But, I ain't dead yet...=P

I was at the HMB Art and Pumpkin festival and I wanted a sandwich... I quickly yelped to see what was there and I found this shop. Yeah the bread is great and fluffy and fresh and homebaked. Nothing too spectacular and unique though, it seemed like a pretty plain 'ol sandwhich to me which was a bit pricey. It was worth it in a way... and it was a very good sandwich don't get me wrong. I'm just going to be honest and say I'm not really seeing what the fuss is about. Maybe I should've tried the Olive and walnut bread as opposed to just the french bread. By the way I had a roastbeef with everything minus onions. Not bad.

This is an incredible place to get a sandwich. I had no idea how big the sandwiches were. My husband, two kids and I all got sandwiches yesterday and ate outside on the lovely patio. I had the cheddar and avocado, my husband had the egg and avocado, my son had turkey and cheese and my daughter just had the cheese only sandwich. They make the sandwich exactly how you want it. The bread is incredible. My husband also had the clam chowder. Yummy! The only downside is it was too big. My kids ended up eating their other half of sandwich on the way home. I had mine for dinner. My husband's half is still in the fridge. In all, amazing bread and great sandwich. Go and enjoy!

A great spot for a great sandwich!!! On weekends my husband and I like to go here and are never disappointed. The olive bread is the best, but all are wonderful. So moist and a good size, almost too big. You will not leave hungry. Don't hesitate if you see a line, it is worth the wait. It is located right in downtown half moon bay. Very cute for shopping and the beach is near by. Also, an extra plus is that this deli allows dogs too.

My friends and I dropped in to this tiny spot on our way to the beach, to pick up some sandwiches and drinks with the kiddos. The line was out the door -- granted it was Saturday at 12:30 -- which is always a great sign. I got a standard sandwich, and was delighted with the thick cuts of fresh home-made bread. I also liked the full-length pickle slices. A good sandwich, but what sets this place aside is the setting. There is a open garden courtyard (go figure) with about 6 tables and benches which make for a perfectly lovely spot to eat your lunch while the kids run amok. We brought in a pack of kiddo food, but no one seemed to mind. Cool spot to know about.

The best sanwich in HMB. Homemade bread, fresh produce and delicious meats. Great for take-out, or eating at a picnic table just outside on a nice day. If you skip this place, you are missing out ona HMB treasure.

My all time favorite sandwich place in the bay area. Oh boy, the home made french bread is what gets me coming back, standing in line willingly without complaint for 30 minutes on a day like today (actually sunny in HMB!) for that perfect slice of heaven. The bread is just the right consistency, thick and goes perfectly with the warm pastrami. Top it off with their homemade potato salad, also a must, and their out-of-this world vegetable and chicken soup, you are talking about a satisfying meal that can only be had at this quirky little shop in downtown HMB. The shop is just a counter attached to a hotel, but you can sit outside in the courtyard.

Came here a few yrs back loved the olive walnut bread so decided to buy 2 loaves to take home this weekend. Never again, very dissapointed. Also would never come back, collected money & prepare food without washing their hands. Gross!

WOW this place is FREAKING AMAZING!!!!!!! Today my bf and I went to HMB thinking that the downtown here was going to be amazing like Carmel Beach... NOT!!! HMB has the crappiest DOWNTOWN EVER! There is nothing there but country looking shops! Totally not a touristy place to be! Anyway, we were super hungry and figured that a sandwich would do before we headed to The Ritz-Carlton for dinner. We arrive at Garden Deli around 1pm, and was greeted by a very nice lady whom took our order! She had array of european candies that I remember eating when I was back there! BOUNTY.... = Mounds.. =] Back to the sandwich: We decided to get the turkey sandwich on wheat bread: added jack cheese and avocado! WOW.. it was sooo freaking tasty and GIGANTIC!! Thank god, we decided to share a sandwich because it was definitely not a regular cheap-O sandwich you get from an ordinary deli... Let's end it with how AMAZING the bread is... I believe that bread is an important factor for a sandwich. HOMEMADE WHEAT BREAD!!!!!! I honestly, did not imagine the bread to be this succulent! The first thing that came out of my mouth was... OOoMMMm yum! =] This place was worth a 45 minute drive, however, since HMB didn't have crap to do. We cancelled our trip to RC! Maybe next time HMB! As for Garden Deli, I will see you soon!

What can I say, but sublime! I trek 84 miles north of my home via motorcycle or car just for a bite of one of their yummy concoctions. One just cannot go wrong with any of their offerings...I guarantee it! Lastly...the homemade bread...all of them are ridiculously delicious, especially the olive walnut!

The sandwiches were pretty good, the patio area was nice and the bread was really fresh but the selection was small and very basic (something I can easily make at home) and it was pretty expensive for a basic sandwich especially if you want anything extras ie cheese, avocado,or sprouts.

Your choice of homebaked wheat bread, walnut olive or French bread. I ordered the egg salad and avocado sandwich on wheat bread and vegetable chicken rice soup - both tastes like homemade. The bread is freshly baked - slightly sweet and moist. T.J. Moore was singing and playing the guitar in the middle of a lovely patio. Delicious sandwich and soup at very reasonable price with free entertainment on sunny patio - best lunch deal in HMB!

What makes this place truly fantastic is their fresh baked bread they serve every day and it is not just run of the mill kind, it also offers unique breads like olive walnut that so many people love. As for the meat, they pile it high on each one! This place gets quite busy during normal lunch ours, so expect a 10 or 15 minute wait or so, but it is worth it! Order a sandwich, drink and chips then grab a seat either on their benches right outside or take a 20 or so minute walk to the beach and enjoy it there!

if God could make a sandwich, simple and from the earth's natural bounty, it would be a garden deli & cafe sandwich. it is ALL about the bread at this place! and simple, fresh ingredients make it even better. you can even purchase a loaf to take home. on a long over-due return visit, i notice they don't stack as much roast beef on the sandwiches. what ever happened to that huskey, irish looking guy that made the sandwiches? i liked his technique the best!

This place popped in my head, I think I last ate there sometime in 2002. This place always comes to mind when I think of some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. A non-sub sandwich place seemed like an unfulfilling idea at the time, but how wrong I was. Its not under 6 grams of fat, but their pastrami & swiss on freshly made loaf bread will make any sub lover think twice. You can't realy go wrong with this place, grab some grub and head for the beach.

While in the peninsula/bay area for only an afternoon, my boyfriend and I scoped places to eat before our mega road trip across country back to Detroit. I insisted on someplace local and fresh, and we peeked our heads into the Garden Deli & Cafe. What a mistake! Here we are - over a week later - and he is still going on about the Egg Salad and Avocado sandwich we experienced at the Cafe! I wonder if I call the owner if she will disclose the secret ingredients of this sandwich? One thing is for certain - each individual ingredient is high quality. I took one look at their greens and salad fixins and knew we had made the right choice. Picking up our sandwiches delighted my boyfriend - he had a huge smile when I returned to the patio/dining area and announced, "they're SO heavy!!" I grabbed my sandwich and felt the soft, fresh bread accompanying my deli selection. You could taste the love with which it was made! I would never think to describe an egg salad sandwich as decadent, but this is exactly the type of product coming out of a very unassuming deli by the beach. If I don't figure out a comparable recipe soon (complete with fresh baked bread!) I might have to figure out a way to have a sandwich express mailed!
